Sea trials are considered the final test means of assessing performance, safety, and reliability prior the newly built vessel departs for its intended duties. Recently, Ernst had the privilege to conduct comprehensive sea trials of Farra Siskin, a nearly 30m long Damen Shipyard catamaran intended to operate as a crew transfer vessel (CTV) to serve mainly offshore wind farms. CTV-s play a critical role in offshore operations. Their reliable performance directly affects the vessel owner’s operational efficiency and the crew’s safety, which is exactly why sea trials are designed to push every limit before final approval.
During the Farra Siskin’s sea trials, Ernst’s previous extensive experience in handling various vessels as Master proved invaluable. He knew exactly what to look for: the slight hesitation in a turn, the subtle vibration that others might miss, the response time that falls just outside optimal parameters. With high expectations and demands set on the vessel’s performance, nothing escaped his attention.
Three days full of tests: SAT, HAT, and classification society’s tests
During this critical period, Ernst executed the thorough testing protocols: Sea Acceptance Test (SAT), Harbor Acceptance Test (HAT), and class tests. Each assessment demanded precision and expertise that could only be visible to an eye seasoned with years of experience in vessel handling. Farra Siskin presented unique testing parameters that Ernst and the team combined of Baltic Workboats, Farra Marine and Damen Shipyard representatives, put to the test.
Success through rigorous standards
With some minor tweaks needed, Farra Siskin passed with flying colors- every test, standard and requirement. This success story didn’t happen by chance. It was the result of meticulous planning, expert execution, and unwavering commitment to quality. In the marine industry, thoroughness isn’t optional—it’s essential, especially when conducting sea trials of a newbuild.

“We’ve worked with Workboats Consulting for years, and Ernst has consistently proven himself as someone we can fully rely on,” noted Jürgen Part, Project manager at Baltic Workboats. “For the Farra Siskin sea trials, that trust was once again well placed. His handling of the vessel, attention to even the smallest details, and calm, experienced approach left a strong impression—not only on us but also on the client. The representatives from Farra Marine were clearly impressed with both Ernst’s capabilities and the way the vessel performed under his command.”
Expertise in conducting sea trials
The sea trials of Farra Siskin reflected more than technical success—they showcased the trust that our clients and partners placed in the expertise and experience of Ernst as a Master.
